Olde Towne Holiday Lights

Festivities begin at 5 PM on the Middle Street Mall (outside the Children’s Museum of Virginia).  Christmas music begins at 5.  There’s face painting for the kids and lots of holiday themed characters walking around to keep you entertained.  That Art Store will have make and take activities for the kids too.  At 5:30, the Children’s Chorus performs a rendition of Light Up Olde Towne.  The official kickoff begins at 6, with a Welcome from the Mayor followed by greetings from Father Christmas and a performance by the Carolers of Christmas Past.  Immediately following, the snow begins to fall and onto the stage comes the Snow Queen and her Sugar Plum Fairy as they light the city’s Official Holiday Tree.

The Olde Towne Farmers Market will sponsor 100 printed family photos, so you can have your picture made in front of the tree or with a holiday character now or wait for photos with Santa at the final stop of the night.  By 6:45, you should be ready to follow the bagpipers to the next stop, the Portsmouth Arts & Cultural Center.  Here, you’ll meet the Grinch and Little Cindy Lou Hoo.  The Children’s Chorus performs again and the magical courtyard of the 1846 Courthouse will be lit in holiday glory.

But wait, the show’s not over yet.  Follow the bagpipes up to Green Street where you’ll be treated to a pyrotechnic display and Santa’s arrival on a real Portsmouth Fire Truck, flashing lights, horns, and all!  While you’re here, roast some marshmallows on an open fire, watch clips from your favorite holiday cartoons, and most importantly, have your picture made with Santa.

Come enjoy the evening and watch the Christmas tree come alive and dance throughout the evening with over 5,000 lights! There will be free hot chocolate, free clam chowder, and special samples. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in a horse-drawn carriage at 6:00 PM.

Be mesmerized by the snow globes as they come alive with dancing elves, ballerinas, a yo-yo champion, drummer boy, tap dancers, and more! Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet little ones in their own Santa snow globe. Walk through the larger-than-life-sized ornaments.

“Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical”

This musical features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the Holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2024 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by 3-time Tony Award winning director, Jack O’Brien.

Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award-nominated Jennifer Weber, this contemporary dance spectacle is a re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic, smashing hip hop dance and Tchaikovsky’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event. The Hip Hop Nutcracker is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set.

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra welcomes Dr. Henry Panion back to Chrysler Hall to lead a soulful celebration of the season featuring a community gospel choir led by Minister Earl Bynum (Director of The Mount Unity Choir). The symphony will celebrate one of the most esteemed names in gospel music, Richard Smallwood. His songs have become standards of American church choral music, and Dr. Panion’s moving orchestral arrangements of them will bring the audience to their feet.

Virginia Handbell Consort

Formed in the fall of 1996, the Virginia Handbell Consort became the first community handbell ensemble in the Hampton Roads area. Their auditioned musicians perform on handbells, hand chimes, and a variety of other percussion instruments.  Under the direction of Al Reese, the Virginia Handbell Consort displays a stunning demonstration in the art of English handbell ringing, an art that is beautiful to hear as well as fascinating to watch. Their concert repertoire is a mix of sacred, classic, contemporary, show tunes, and big band swing designed to showcase their unique instrument.
